The reasons behind what we do are the fuel of life. The best reasons are what keep us going. Knowledge is power. Be well. Be strong. Mentally. Physically. Yes, all of these things. But why? To be lighter. To be tougher. To live longer. To see our loved ones grow, and show up for them physically and emotionally? What is it for you?
The best evidence-based outcomes for wellness and sustainable weight loss all require motivation, devotion, drive, commitment, intention, and consistent acknowledgement of our own 'why', whether it intrinsic or extrinsic, or a combination of both. The why gets us to adhere to a healthier path.
Here at What's Your Why?, even if you aren't sure of your 'why', or are feeling hopeless, I want to help you learn, grow, and become the best possible version of yourself. When you come into my office, I want to welcome you to the first day, of the rest of your life. Increased knowledge, gratitude for your body, and mindfulness are the keys to living your best life. I am my patients' information source, and reminder that we get one life, one body, and together, we must seize the day, every day.
I have been in the fitness industry longer than I have been a nurse. When I decided to get the highest level of education in nursing, I felt it wise to merge my passions and focus my Doctoral research and quality improvement project on obesity and weight management. During that time, I became a member of the Obesity Medicine Association, and took over 80 hours of education in the management of obesity. Through my ongoing research and education I became extremely passionate about nutrition. Getting another degree in nutrition would be costly and take years to complete, so instead I continuously educate myself in this area to better serve my patients, and quite frankly, myself and my children.
Real food, and movement, are MEDICINE.
While I love preventative medicine and my job as a Family Nurse Practitioner, overweight and obesity management are prevention. Prevention of metabolic disease, heart disease, hyperlipidemia, and countless ailments, risks, and complications of obesity.
Through my years of personal training and leading group fitness, I have become increasingly interested in muscle mass and body composition and the role these play in longevity, function, bone health, mental health, sleep quality, and countless mental and physical facets of our day to day lives.
My research and education over the years have continuously fueled my passion for metabolic health. Not only what it can do for my patients, but what it has done for me, personally.
As we age, we are losing muscle mass. Sarcopenia, or muscle wasting is a normal part of aging, and this is NOT common knowledge. Additionally, muscles themselves are the only endocrine organ that we have control over.
How our body uses food, how we function, how many calories we burn simply sitting, ALL depend on our body composition. The greater amount of lean tissue we have, the more efficient our activity AND inactivity.
I have so much information to share, and I want to make an impact on my community. I want to get people feeling better, growing stronger, and living longer. All of my patients will have endless access to everything from recipes I have to share, to the latest evidence-based information and resources. Additionally, I have invested in the most accurate body composition machine there is, to give my patients accurate biometric measures so that they may become and stay motivated to improve, maintain, or transform their body compositions.

I will share everything from book titles to recipes. Nutritional consultation will be based entirely on your needs and goals. I will provide evidence-based tips and tricks that will support and improve your relationship with food. Real, quality food, is not only delicious, but have medicinal effects on our bodies.

In order to be successful on your weight loss journey, you must be getting restorative sleep. Often times, a referral may need to be made to be evaluate for sleep apnea. The hormonal imbalances and dysregulation that occurs in the body that poorly sleeps keeps weight on, or makes it impossible to lose weight.

Most individuals don't get enough water. Additionally, most are unaware that to be successful with weight loss, we must be appropriately hydrated.

Stress releases cortisol and will keep weight on or make losing weight almost impossible. I will provide everything from support to de-stressing tips and books/resources to explore.
Physical activity consultation will be whatever you need or are looking for. Whether it a specific plan to a lesson in FORM for specific exercises. Movement is medicine.

Those who are successful in weight loss and keep it off long term self-regulate in some way shape or form that serves them. From SMART goals, to journaling, to apps and smart watches or calendars, having a plan, and keeping that appointment with YOURSELF, sustains healthy change and achieves goals. Getting started is the toughest part. The way you feel once you do will keep you going.

Support from a medical profession such as myself, alongside finding other social supports in your day to day life, will keep you on your journey to your healthiest self. Once an established patient of mine, you will have access through our patient portal to direct message me as you need.

Overweight and obesity are multifactorial and require time and expertise to treat. Lengthy visit where we build the medical chart with complete health history, evaluate the root causes of obesity, and begin to construct a plan for treatment. Everything from labs, to referrals, to providing you with your superbill for submission to insurance for reimbursement. The medical software I have invested in is amazing and easy to work with.
I became a member of the American Aerobic Association International/International Sports Medicine Association in 2008 while entering nursing school. I lead group fitness classes and am the fitness director of Get Fit. (Just downstairs from my office!). I am a certified personal trainer, among many other things, and if it is training you would like, we can do this under the physical activity consultation booking. We can either have a personal training session or stay in my office and work on a plan for you to do at home. Otherwise, we can work on form, or discuss safe, specific exercises and plans that will work for your life and schedule.
I have invested in the machine for you! The seca mBCA produced in Germany, is about 99% accurate (next best thing to an MRI!). It will tell you your body composition, and with the app/software you can have access to your results from anywhere. Bring your results back to your trainer, or stay with me for a scan plus consultation. If you are truly committed to lifestyle changes, I recommend scanning at least every 6 months, and as closely as 3 month intervals.
Whatever it is you need or want to know, I am here to provide it. If I don't have the answer, I will find it. The medical software I have invested in has up to date information that is at your fingertips, alongside my own expertise and information I have to share. I have been educating myself in nutrition for over two years now. Personalized information will be provided to you, whether it be for weight loss, diabetes, hypertension, or anti-inflammatory dietary information, I have it. I will also order labs or place referrals for you if clinically indicated.

I hold multiple certifications through the AAAI/ISMA. I've been a member since 2008, continuing education annually. With my Doctoral research and courses through the Obesity Medicine Association, including a workshop in culinary medicine, my interest and expertise in nutrition continues to grow.
